I am known to spend all Summer trading one canvas tote for another — I admit to being one of those people who has tote bags full of tote bags. But come Fall, it’s time for cozier textures and a more dressed up ensemble. The size remains Mary-Poppins-worthy, as besides my own stuff I tend to trek around with small Pokemon stuffed animals, seemingly endless snacks, and way too many tubes of lip balm. Right now, I’m obsessed with the Prospect Tote (Short) by Sylvan Park. It’s a dream in leather.

And not just any leather, let me tell you. That’s one of the things that makes Sylvan Park’s stunning bags so special. They use Italian vegetable-tanned leather, personally sourced by designer Betsy Baird from a family-owned tannery in Tuscany. Sustainability is part of every step of the process for Sylvan Park, and that starts with the plant-based materials used at the workshop, rather than the harsh substances used to tan most leather today. The result is a buttery-soft leather that ages gracefully over time.

The Prospect Short has a bigger sibling, Sylvan Park’s flagship. But I think for this Fall, I’m going to try to tame the contents of my bag. And that starts with a slightly smaller scale.
